CAN ports on both devices do not prove agreement on frame parameters, data meaning or control interaction. Even when messages are received, the inverter may not interpret battery states or use BMS limits correctly. Identify the actual differences before deciding whether a gateway is needed.
Check Each Layer of the Interface
| Layer | What to Check | Insufficient Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical connection | Pinout, transceivers, supply, reference ground, termination and isolation | The same connector permits direct connection |
| Bus and frames | Bit rate, standard or extended frames, CAN or CAN FD, identifiers | Receiving one frame proves compatibility for all messages |
| Data definitions | Field location, byte order, scaling, units, signed values and invalid values | A correct SOC proves all fields are correct |
| Application interaction | Node roles, startup order, periods, request and response, timeouts | Sending status continuously permits charging and discharging |
Which Differences Can a Gateway Address?
Where documentation and authorization permit, a gateway can decode messages, re-encode fields, map states, schedule transmission and handle timeouts. Changing identifiers alone cannot overcome unsupported frame formats, missing interface protection, unavailable critical states or an inaccessible target protocol. Missing protection or limit data must not be replaced with fabricated normal values.
Suggested Verification Sequence
First identify both device models, firmware and protocol versions. Personnel familiar with the equipment should review electrical conditions. Capture messages in the agreed test environment, check data fields, then test startup, normal interaction, timeouts and recovery. Record the tested device combination and functions without extending the result to every model of a brand.
Reference and Scope
Consult the actual chip and driver documentation for frame formats and controller capability. The Espressif reference below distinguishes standard and extended frames and CAN FD support. It does not validate a particular board or battery and inverter pair. This article provides a review method, not a tested compatibility claim for a brand combination.

Questions and Answers
Do matching pinouts and bit rates establish direct interoperability?
Not by themselves. In addition to electrical and bus conditions, check frame formats, identifiers, field meanings, units, node roles, startup order and timeouts, then test the agreed device combination. Matching connection conditions cover only part of that review.
Is changing CAN identifiers to the values expected by the inverter sufficient?
Changing identifiers may be a limited part of the work only when the remaining definitions agree. Differences in scaling, signed values, limits, states, periods or fault rules still need mapping and verification. Missing states must not be replaced with fabricated normal values.
Can a tested combination establish compatibility for other models of the same brand?
Not automatically. A result should identify the battery, BMS, inverter, firmware and protocol versions and the functions tested. Other models or versions need a difference review and the relevant additional tests. This article does not report a successfully tested brand combination.
